Clade 1 Variant Kills Nearly A Third Of Infected Individuals

Deadly Mpox Strain Spreads to Multiple African Countries

Clade 1 Variant Kills Nearly a Third of Infected Individuals

Outbreak Raises Concerns Amid Rising Mpox Cases Globally

A more virulent strain of the mpox virus, known as clade 1, has emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and has spread to other African countries, causing significant concern among public health officials. According to recent reports, clade 1 has a mortality rate of approximately 3%, significantly higher than the milder clade 2 strain.

As of last month, over 37,500 cases of mpox and 1,450 deaths have been reported in 15 African countries since January 2022. The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated this outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern, prompting increased global response efforts.

The virus, which is related to smallpox, has caused a large outbreak in the Kamituga mining region of the DRC. The highly mobile population in this area has contributed to the rapid spread of the virus across borders. Symptoms of mpox include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring the situation and is urging health care providers to be vigilant for suspected cases. While the risk of mpox transmission in the United States is currently low, travelers to affected areas are advised to take precautions.

To prevent the further spread of mpox, public health officials recommend avoiding contact with infected individuals, maintaining good hygiene practices, and getting vaccinated if eligible. The CDC has developed a vaccine that is effective in preventing infection with both the clade 1 and clade 2 strains of mpox.
