What Happened?

On Thursday, July 29th, 2023, Kentucky Circuit Judge John David Dugan was shot and killed in his chambers at the Spencer County Courthouse in Taylorsville. The alleged shooter, Spencer County Sheriff David Ernest, was arrested and charged with murder.

According to Kentucky State Police, the shooting occurred around 9:00 a.m. when Sheriff Ernest entered Judge Dugan's chambers and fired multiple shots. Sheriff Ernest was taken into custody at the scene.

Judge Dugan, 53, was a well-respected member of the Kentucky legal community. He had served as a Circuit Judge since 2014.

Sheriff David Ernest

Sheriff Ernest, 61, has been the Spencer County Sheriff since 2018. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and a former police officer.

Why Did It Happen?
