The flag of South Sudan was adopted on July 9, 2005, following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the Second Sudanese Civil War. The design of the flag was chosen through a nationwide competition, and the winning entry was submitted by a young artist named Rezik Zechariah.
Symbolism
The flag of South Sudan consists of three broad horizontal stripes of black, red, and green, with two narrower white stripes separating the colored bands. The black stripe represents the struggles and sacrifices of the South Sudanese people during their long struggle for independence. The red stripe represents the blood shed by the people in their fight for freedom. The green stripe represents the land and natural resources of South Sudan, which are the foundation of the country's wealth and prosperity. The white stripes represent peace and unity, which are the aspirations of the South Sudanese people.
