Classical Revivalist Art

The History of Art Movements in India

Revivalism

Revivalism, originating in the mid-nineteenth century, is a key art movement in India. Originating with the Bengal School in Calcutta (now Kolkata), this movement sought to revive traditional Indian art forms and techniques, while incorporating elements of Western art. Revivalism played a significant role in shaping the development of modern Indian art and continues to influence contemporary artists.

Gothic Revival Architecture

An Overview

Gothic Revival architecture, a popular architectural style in the 19th century, has left a lasting mark on India. Inspired by medieval European architecture, Gothic Revival buildings in India often feature pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and elaborate ornamentation. Notable examples include Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Kolkata's Victoria Memorial.

Classical Revival

Art and architecture in the style of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, known as Classical Revival, flourished in India during the British colonial period. This style reflects simplicity, harmony, and balance, and can be seen in buildings such as the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi and the Madras High Court in Chennai.
